Philips Arena
In July 1997, the old Omni Coliseum was imploded and replaced by one of the nation's leading
state-of-the art multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex's, Philips Arena. The Arena's architectural design enhances the contemporary buildings surrounding the facility. It is located across from Centennial Olympic Park.
The Arena is connected with CNN Center and is conveniently near downtown Atlanta. Its unique roofline and dramatic nighttime lighting make it a focal point of the city. However, the real story is inside. While seating for most of Philips Arena is traditional lower-deck/upper deck, upper deck fans sit closer to the floor than in any other major arena built in the last decade. Also inside, you will find 500 video monitors so fans have a great visual of the action. A 400-foot long interior "street" called the Hawk's Walk and the Thrasher's Nest, located between the upper and lower decks feature a variety of food vendors, retail shops and entertainment for fans seeking additional excitement during half-time.
In addition to being home of the Atlanta Hawks basketball team and the Atlanta Thrashers, a National Hockey League (NHL) expansion team, Philips Arena also hosts other sports events, concerts and theatrical performances. Philips Arena offers a guest experience unmatched in the industry. It is operated by the Atlanta Spirit, LLC and hosts more than 200 sports and entertainment events annually with 2006 being another successful year for the Arena. In 2005, Philips Arena was ranked the number 7 fan-friendliest NBA venue, out of 29 Arenas.
The Atlanta Hawks are poised to rise in the NBA
Eastern Conference. New team members have
made an immediate impact and contributed
significantly to the team’s success. The Atlanta Thrashers hockey team has a talented roster, which is making great strides within the league.
Community outreach by the Hawks and Thrashers is another ongoing pursuit. The Hawks have renovated basketball courts with Home Depot, donated game tickets to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Atlanta, served Thanksgiving meals at My Sister’s House and donated to UNICEF for Asia Tsunami Relief. The Thrashers work with many area medical facilities to provide support and gifts to patients and their families during difficult times.
The Thrashers also sponsors Score for Schools, which provides physical education activities for kids, minorities, women, and people with disabilities. Blood drives and battling hunger are other means in which the Atlanta Thrashers makes a difference in the community.
